Confabulation

A term used to describe AI-generated content that fills gaps in knowledge with fabricated information, presented with unwarranted confidence as if factual.

Similar to hallucination; the AI fills in gaps in its knowledge by inventing plausible-sounding information. Like a person who can't remember something and unconsciously makes up a convincing story.

Confabulation is a governance risk because the AI presents fabricated information with confidence, making it difficult for users to identify errors. Your governance policies should require fact-checking processes for AI-generated content in high-stakes contexts.
