Black Box Model

An AI model whose internal workings are opaque or too complex for humans to understand, making it difficult to explain how specific inputs lead to outputs.

In Plain Language

An AI where you can see the inputs and outputs but can't understand what happens in between. Like a vending machine that sometimes gives you the wrong item and you can't figure out why.

Why This Matters

Black box models present significant governance challenges. Your AI governance policy should define when black box models are acceptable and what additional controls (such as enhanced monitoring and external audits) are required to manage the associated risks.
