Jailbreaking

Techniques used to bypass the safety guardrails and content policies of an AI model, particularly large language models, to elicit prohibited or harmful outputs.

In plain language

Finding clever ways to make an AI ignore its safety rules. A user might frame a harmful request in a creative way, use role-playing scenarios or provide false context to persuade the AI to produce content it's supposed to refuse.

Why this matters

Jailbreaking presents a direct operational risk to any organisation deploying conversational AI. Your risk management framework must include red teaming, guardrail testing, user monitoring and incident response procedures to reduce the likelihood of successful jailbreak attempts leading to harmful outputs.

Relevance

Implementation

Jailbreaking risks require practical mitigation strategies including regular testing, user training and robust monitoring of AI system outputs.
